Yellow Chat
Epthianura crocea

Epthianura crocea
The Yellow Chat (*Epthianura crocea*) is a small, native Australian bird found in the wetlands and floodplains of northern Australia. Known for its vibrant yellow plumage, this bird thrives in some of the country's harshest environments, from tropical wetlands to arid floodplains.
1. Breeding males feature bright yellow plumage with a black crescent on the breast.
2. Females and non-breeding males have muted yellow tones without the black marking.
3. Their high-pitched "tee-tsu-tee" calls are often heard during display flights or from low perches.
Yellow Chats inhabit northern Australia’s coastal floodplains, wetlands, and samphire marshes, ranging from the Kimberley region to Queensland. Isolated populations exist near Darwin and Rockhampton. They are often seen foraging at the edges of wetlands or perched on low vegetation. Early mornings are ideal for spotting these birds as they actively feed during this time. Being nomadic, their presence depends on water availability, so timing is crucial when searching for them.
