Species Description

The Cockatiel *(Nymphicus hollandicus)* is a small, slender member of the cockatoo family and one of Australia’s most recognizable birds. Known for its bright orange cheek patches and expressive crest, this sociable parrot is native to mainland Australia’s arid and semi-arid landscapes. Cockatiels are highly adaptable, forming flocks that can number in the hundreds as they travel vast distances in search of water and food. Their graceful flight and distinctive calls make them a delight to observe in the wild.

Fun Facts

Cockatiels are Australia's second most popular pet bird worldwide (after Budgerigars), valued for their gentle nature and melodic whistles.

1. Males have bright yellow faces and crests; females are predomitly grey.

2. White wing patches visible in flight against grey body.

3. Pointed crest used for communication.

Cockatiels nest in tree hollows near water sources, often in dead or dying eucalypts. Both parents share incubation duties for clutches of 4–7 white eggs, which hatch after 17–23 days. Hatchlings fledge at around 4–5 weeks old. Highly nomadic, Cockatiels travel vast distances following rainfall and seed production, forming flocks that can number in the hundreds.

Cockatiels inhabit open woodlands, grasslands, shrublands, and semi-arid regions across mainland Australia, avoiding dense forests and coastal areas. They are nomadic birds that follow water sources and food availability, often congregating near rivers, dams, or waterholes. Look for them perched in trees or feeding on the ground in open areas, particularly at dawn or dusk when they come to drink. Their distinctive calls can help locate flocks even from a distance.
