Species Description

The Little Corella is a small, sociable white cockatoo that brings character and commotion to the Australian landscape. These playful birds are often seen in large, noisy flocks that swirl across the sky like animated snowflakes, their cheerful antics and raucous calls making them impossible to ignore.

Fun Facts

Little Corellas are notorious pranksters, often seen playing what looks like tag or sliding down sloped roofs just for fun.

1. Blue eye-ring and small pink patch between eye and bill

2. Short, stubby bill compared to other white cockatoos

3. Playful, acrobatic behaviour when in groups, often hanging upside-down from branches

Little Corellas breed when conditions are favourable rather than in a fixed season. They nest in tree hollows, often in large colonies with multiple nests in a single tree. Both parents share incubation duties and care for their young. These birds form strong pair bonds that may last for life, and family groups join larger flocks for feeding and roosting.

Little Corellas are widespread across Australia, particularly in inland areas near water sources. Look for them feeding on the ground in open grassy areas, especially at dawn and dusk when they're most active. They gather in impressive numbers around waterholes, agricultural areas, and parklands. Listen for their distinctive slurred, falsetto calls that carry across the landscape. A helpful tip: if you spot one Little Corella, scan the areathey're rarely alone and the rest of the flock is likely nearby.

Little Corellas have expanded their range since European settlement, benefiting from agricultural development and additional water sources. Known by various names in Aboriginal languages, including "Ngarnamarlu" among some groups, these birds feature in traditional stories about seasonal changes and water availability across the Australian landscape.
