Torresian Crow
Corvus orru

Corvus orru
The Torresian Crow is a large black bird native to northern Australia, thriving in both urban and natural landscapes. Known for its adaptability, nasal call, and wing-shuffling behaviour this species is a common sight in coastal towns from Brisbane to Darwin.
1. White eyes contrasting with glossy black plumage.
2. Wing-shuffling behaviour when landing.
3. High-pitched nasal call, typically with more than three notes.
Breeding pairs maintain permanent territories and build stick nests high in trees or on artificial structures like power poles. Both parents share nest-building and chick-rearing duties. Outside the breeding season, non-breeding birds form flocks of 2-15 individuals, which roam widely in search of food. These crows are opportunistic feeders, consuming insects, carrion, fruits, and human food scraps.
Torresian Crows are found across northern Australia, from Brisbane to Darwin and into Western Australia. They inhabit woodlands, beaches, parks, and urban areas, often seen foraging on the ground or perched on tall structures like power poles. Early morning is ideal for spotting them as they leave communal roosts or search for food.
