Coracina maxima

Coracina maxima
The Ground Cuckooshrike (*Coracina maxima*) is Australia's largest cuckooshrike, measuring up to 38 cm in length. Found primarily in inland regions, this slender bird is adapted for ground-foraging, often seen strutting across open landscapes with purposeful movements.
1. Long legs adapted for ground-foraging
2. Contrasting plumage: grey head, black wings, barred white underparts
3. Unique bobbing head motion when walking
These social birds form small groups year-round, maintaining strong family bonds. During the breeding season (August–December), older siblings may assist parents in feeding new chicks. Their nests are shallow cups built high in trees using bark, grass, and stems.
Ground Cuckooshrikes inhabit arid and semi-arid inland regions across Australia, favouring open woodlands with sparse ground cover near watercourses or floodplains. They are often spotted walking on bare ground or perched on dead trees or fence posts in small family groups.
