Species Description

The Pied Currawong is a large, black bird native to eastern Australia and Lord Howe Island. It is a familiar sight in forests, urban parks, and gardens. Its loud, melodious "curra-wong" call resonates across both bushland and suburban areas, making it a recognizable part of the soundscape in eastern Australia. Adaptable and opportunistic, this bird thrives in diverse environments, from coastal forests to cityscapes.

Fun Facts

Pied Currawongs can mimic other birds and human-made sounds like car alarms or whistles.

1. Glossy black plumage with prominent white patches on the rump, undertail, tail tips, and wing bases.

2. Loud "curra-wong" call that inspired its name.

3. Bright yellow eyes that stand out against its black face.

Pied Currawongs are omnivorous and opportunistic feeders. Their diet includes berries, seeds, insects, small reptiles, bird eggs, and even young birds or small mammals like possums. They are known to store food in tree crevices or forks for later consumptiona behaviour referred to as creating a "larder." During breeding season (August to December), they build large stick nests high in tree forks. The female incubates the eggs while the male provides food. In cooler months, populations from higher altitudes migrate to lowlands. Outside the breeding season, they often form flocks but may be seen alone or in pairs at other times.

Pied Currawongs are widespread across eastern Australia, from Queensland to Victoria, including urban areas where they have adapted well. They frequent forests, woodlands, parks, and gardens with mature trees. Look for them perched on high branches or rooftops during early mornings or late afternoons when they are most active. Their distinctive call often gives away their presence.

The name "currawong" is believed to have Indigenous origins from southeastern Australian languages and reflects the bird’s onomatopoeic call. The Pied Currawong’s adaptability has allowed it to thrive alongside European settlement, unlike many native species.
