Pacific Emerald Dove
Chalcophaps longirostris

Chalcophaps longirostris
The Pacific Emerald Dove is a small, stocky pigeon known for its vibrant emerald-green wings and forest-dwelling habits. Found across northern and eastern Australia, this bird often forages quietly on the forest floor or flies low through dense vegetation, blending seamlessly into its rainforest surroundings.
1. The emerald-green wings create a striking contrast against the purple-brown or rufous-brown body.
2. Males have a prominent white shoulder patch that stands out when perched.
3. In flight, look for grey bars across the back and the rounded tail shape.
Pacific Emerald Doves inhabit rainforests, wet sclerophyll forests, gallery forests, and monsoon forests throughout northern and eastern Australia. They are often seen along forest edges, tracks, and clearings, foraging on the ground or walking along trails. These doves are relatively approachable in undisturbed areas such as picnic grounds near forests. Their soft cooing calls resonate through the forest during late afternoons.
