Species Description

The Spangled Drongo is a medium-sized black bird with a long, forked tail that curves slightly upward at the tips. Found across northern and eastern Australia, this bird is easily recognised by its glossy black plumage with iridescent blue-green highlights and vivid red eyes. Its slightly hooked bill and confident, acrobatic behaviour make it a captivating sight in both urban and natural landscapes.

Fun Facts

Spangled Drongos are expert mimics, imitating calls of other birds like butcherbirds or kingfishers.

1. Glossy black plumage with iridescent blue-green highlights.

2. Long, forked tail with an outward flare.

3. Bright red eyes in adults; brown eyes in juveniles.

These birds primarily feed on flying insects such as beetles, wasps, and dragonflies but occasionally consume fruit or nectar. They perch conspicuously before launching into acrobatic flights to catch prey. Breeding occurs between September and February; pairs build delicate cup-shaped nests high in tree forks using twigs, vines, and spider webs. Both parents share responsibilities for incubation and feeding their 3-5 chicks. Spangled Drongos are territorial during breeding season and will aggressively defend their nests.

Spangled Drongos are found in diverse habitats, including rainforests, woodlands, mangroves, and urban parks, primarily along the eastern and northern coasts of Australia. They are most active during daylight hours and are often seen perched on exposed branches or powerlines. Their aerial acrobatics while catching insects mid-flight are a signature behaviour. Listen for their loud, metallic calls or mimicry of other birds.

The Spangled Drongo is the only drongo species found in Australia. Its name has been adopted into Australian slang to mean “fool,” though this intelligent bird is anything but foolish. Known for its mimicry skills and bold demeanor, it has earned admiration for its resourcefulness and aerial agility.
