Great Egret
Ardea alba

Ardea alba
The Great Egret is a large waterbird known for its pure white feathers and elegant stature. Standing over a meter tall with a wingspan of up to 1.7 meters, it is one of the most recognizable herons in Australia's wetlands. Its long neck, black legs, and yellow bill make it a striking presence in shallow waters, where it moves gracefully in search of prey.
1. Larger than other white egrets in Australia with a long S-shaped neck.
2. Yellow bill (black during breeding) and black legs.
3. Breeding plumage includes long back plumes and green facial skin.
Great Egrets are widespread across Australia wherever shallow water is present. They frequent wetlands, billabongs, mangroves, flooded paddocks, and riverbanks. Look for them wading slowly or standing still in water less than 3 cm deep. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for spotting them as they hunt for fish and other prey.
