Black Falcon
Falco subniger

Falco subniger
The Black Falcon is Australia’s largest falcon and is found across the open landscapes of inland Australia. This powerful raptor is well-adapted to hunting over wide plains and sparse woodlands in arid and semi-arid regions. Its dark appearance and agile flight make it a notable presence in these environments.
1. Mostly dark brown to black feathers with a pale chin and throat
2. Long, pointed wings with forward-pushed wrists and tapered tips
3. Square-tipped tail with “stepped” corners visible during soaring
Black Falcons are found in open plains and light woodlands of inland Australia, especially in the Murray-Darling Basin and Lake Eyre regions. They are often seen near watercourses, wetlands, and floodplains in dry areas. These falcons soar high on thermal currents and may perch on dead trees, poles, or fence posts. They sometimes move closer to the coast during droughts. Black Falcons are known to follow grass fires, farm machinery, or livestock to catch prey that is disturbed. They may gather in areas with abundant food, such as during locust outbreaks or when large flocks of Budgerigars are present.
