Species Description

The Red-eared Firetail, also called the boorin, is a small finch-like bird found only in the forests and dense undergrowth of southwestern Western Australia. This species is often missed by casual observers due to its secretive habits and preference for thick vegetation, but it is well known among birdwatchers for its unique appearance and quiet, solitary lifestyle

Fun Facts

Red-eared Firetails are among the most solitary of Australian finches, rarely forming flocks.

1. Bright red patch behind the eye and a black mask on the face.

2. Black belly with bold white spots.

3. Crimson rump visible in flight.

Red-eared Firetails are found in the southwestern corner of Western Australia, from the coastal heaths and dunes near Albany and Cape Arid, through the forests of the lower Darling Scarp, to the dense undergrowth along streams in Jarrah, Marri, and Karri forests. They are most often seen in thick vegetation near water, but can also be found in dense gardens with plenty of cover. The best chance to spot them is early in the morning, listening for their soft, rising “oowee” call
