Species Description

The Wompoo Fruit-Dove is the largest fruit-dove in Australia. This vibrant rainforest bird is known for its rich plumage of purple, green, grey, and yellow, which helps it blend seamlessly into the dappled light of its forest habitat.

Fun Facts

Wompoos can swallow fruits nearly as large as their heads.

1. Purple chest blending into a yellow belly.

2. Large size with a long tail.

3. Loud "wompoo" call echoing through rainforests.

Wompoo Fruit-Doves are obligate frugivores, consuming a wide variety of rainforest fruits whole. They play a vital role in seed dispersal across fragmented rainforests. Breeding occurs primarily from late winter to mid-summer. Both parents build flimsy platform nests of twigs, incubate the single egg, and care for the chick. They move locally in search of fruit but do not undertake long migrations.

The Wompoo Fruit-Dove inhabits rainforests along eastern Australia, from northern New South Wales to Cape York Peninsula, as well as New Guinea. They are most often found in the canopy of mature rainforests, particularly near fruiting trees like figs and laurels. These birds are more frequently heard than seen due to their camouflage and reclusive nature.
