Species Description

The Brown Gerygone (Gerygone mouki) is one of the smallest birds found in Australia’s eastern rainforests. It is a highly active, insect-eating songbird, often seen flitting through dense foliage in search of prey.

Fun Facts

The Brown Gerygone is one of the smallest birds in Australia, making it a challenge to spot in the dense rainforest.

1. White eyebrow and grey-tinged face set off against olive-brown upperparts.

2. Dark tail with white tips, most visible during flight or active foraging.

3. Soft, inquisitive call and energetic movement in mid-level foliage.

This species feeds mainly on insects, which it gleans from leaves and branches or catches in flight. Brown Gerygones are known for their agility and nearly constant movement as they search for food. Breeding occurs between June \- February. They build domed, hanging nests from plant fibers, moss, and spider webs, suspended from thin branches. Both parents participate in raising the young, which hatch from small, speckled eggs.

Brown Gerygones are found along the eastern coastal regions of Australia, from northern Queensland to eastern Victoria. They prefer dense, moist habitats such as coastal and subtropical rainforests, but can also be seen in wet sclerophyll forests and sometimes mangroves. They are usually observed alone or in small groups, actively foraging in the mid to lower canopy.
