Species Description

The Little Grassbird is a small, elusive bird that lives in wetlands and dense reed beds across much of Australia and parts of New Guinea. More often heard than seen, its soft, three-note whistle is a familiar sound in swamps and marshes. This bird is a classic example of an Australian wetland specialist, quietly moving through thick vegetation and often remaining hidden from view.

Fun Facts

Little Grassbirds are more often heard than seen, and their call can carry a surprising distance across wetlands.

1. Streaked brown-grey plumage with a pale eyebrow and throat.

2. Both upperparts and underparts have dark streaks, unlike similar grassbirds.

3. Tail often held upright while moving through reeds.

Little Grassbirds feed mainly on insects and other small invertebrates, foraging low in dense reeds and grasses. They build deep, cup-shaped nests from grass and reeds, lining them with feathers and hiding them well within thick vegetation. Breeding usually takes place from August to January or after significant rainfall, with females laying three to five eggs per clutch. The species is known for its adaptability, often moving into newly flooded wetlands after rains, and is considered nomadic in response to changing water conditions.

Little Grassbirds are widespread across eastern, central, and southwestern Australia, as well as Tasmania and some parts of New Guinea. They are most often found in dense wetland vegetation, such as reed beds, cumbungi swamps, and marshes. The best time to observe them is at dawn or dusk, when they may emerge to feed near reed edges. Their clear, three-note call is often the easiest way to detect their presence.
