Pycnoptilus floccosus

The Pilotbird (*Pycnoptilus floccosus*) is a secretive, ground-dwelling bird found only in the dense, wet forests and heathlands of southeastern Australia. This chunky, chocolate-brown bird is most at home in the thick undergrowth of Victoria and New South Wales, where it spends much of its time foraging among the leaf litter on the forest floor.
1. Deep rufous-brown plumage with a cinnamon face and scalloped chest
2. Broad, rounded tail often held cocked and flicked while foraging
3. Chunky build with strong legs and a short, pointed bill
Pilotbirds are primarily insectivorous, foraging in pairs or small family groups by turning over leaves and debris to find insects, worms, and occasionally seeds or berries. They are largely sedentary, maintaining year-round territories and using their strong legs for brisk movement across the ground. A well-known behaviour is their tendency to follow Superb Lyrebirds, taking advantage of insects disturbed by the larger birds' foraging. Breeding occurs from August to January, with pairs building dome-shaped nests on or near the ground, hidden in dense vegetation. Females incubate eggs and may also be fed by the male. Both parents feed the young, and juveniles may remain with adults until the young males disperse to establish their own territories
Pilotbirds inhabit the wet sclerophyll forests and dense heathlands of southeastern Australia, particularly from the Blue Mountains and Wollemi National Park in New South Wales down to the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne, Victoria. They prefer moist gullies and areas with thick undergrowth and abundant leaf litter, often at elevations above 6 meters for the upland subspecies. These birds are most active at dawn and dusk, foraging quietly on the forest floor and rarely venturing more than a meter or two above ground. Their presence is often detected by their loud, clear, whistled calls, which can carry through dense forest.
