Species Description

The Barn Swallow is a familiar sight across much of the world, easily recognised by its graceful flight and close association with human settlements. In Australia, these agile birds are seen mainly as visitors, gliding and swooping over open spaces and water as they hunt for flying insects.

Fun Facts

Barn Swallows can make sharp turns in flight thanks to their long, forked tails.

1. Deeply forked tail with long streamers (longest in males)

2. Glossy blue upperparts and orange throat/forehead

3. Short, black bill

Look for Barn Swallows in open areas such as fields, wetlands, and near water, especially around farms and rural buildings. They are often seen flying low over water or grass, and may gather near livestock where insects are plentiful. In Australia, they are most often observed during the northern hemisphere’s winter.
