Vanellus miles
Also known as: Spur-winged Plover
The masked lapwing, also known as the spur-winged plover, is a large and distinctive wader that has successfully colonised New Zealand since the 1930s. This bold bird is now a common sight in open areas throughout the country, known for its loud calls and defensive behaviour.
1. Black crown and collar contrasting with white head and chest
2. Bright yellow facial wattles and bill
3. Distinctive yellow spurs on wings
Masked lapwings are known for their aggressive defence of nesting territories. They breed from winter to spring, laying eggs in simple ground nests. Both parents care for the chicks, which can leave the nest within hours of hatching. Their population has grown rapidly since colonising New Zealand.
Look for masked lapwings in open, grassy areas such as parks, sports fields, farmland, and shorelines. They're active during the day and are often seen walking on the ground, searching for food. Dawn and dusk are great times to spot them, but they can be found throughout the day. Listen for their loud, distinctive calls \- these birds are vocal and not shy about making their presence known.
