Whiskered Tern
Chlidonias hybrida

Chlidonias hybrida
The whiskered tern is a rare visitor to New Zealand's freshwater habitats. This small, elegant bird is a treat for keen birdwatchers, with its distinctive appearance and graceful flight. Its occasional presence adds an element of excitement to any day spent observing waterbirds in our wetlands.
1. Breeding adults have a black cap and white "whiskers"; non-breeders have streaked crowns
2. Dark red, pointed bill and long red legs
3. Short, shallow forked tail, unlike other terns' deeply forked tails
Whiskered terns are adaptable feeders, catching small prey from the water's surface or by diving. They're known to quickly colonize temporary wetlands when conditions are right. In Australia, they can form massive breeding colonies during flood events, showcasing their opportunistic nature.
In New Zealand, whiskered terns are typically found near freshwater bodies. Look for them skimming low over lakes, wetlands, and temporary flood waters. They're most active during daylight hours, often seen diving for prey or resting on exposed perches near water. Tip: Scan open water areas carefully; their small size and quick movements can make them easy to miss.
